The Old North Church
If you consider yourself even a casual history enthusiast, the North End is the one of the best areas of Boston to visit, as the neighborhood offers a number of important historical locations. This includes the aforementioned Paul Revere House, and the Old North Church – both located either on or near Hanover Street. In fact, Paul Revere and the Old North Church have a strong connection, as the latter served an important purpose in Revere’s famous midnight ride. As featured in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s iconic poem Paul Revere’s Ride, lanterns were displayed in the church steeple to indicate the way in which British troops were travelling inland – one lantern if by land and two lanterns if by sea.
Copp’s Hill Burying Ground
Located only steps away from the Paul Revere House, Copp’s Hill Burying Ground is another culturally and historically important site that the North End has to offer. This burial ground is the resting place of many notable historical figures, dating all the way back to when Boston was a Puritan settlement. Resting at Copp’s Hill are many leaders from Boston’s past like ministers and local government figures, in addition to soldiers who fell at the Battle of Bunker Hill.
