There are many foods that are essential to Italian cuisine and cooking. This includes (but is not limited to) pasta, pizza, and of course, cheese. Cheese is not only featured in countless dishes across Italian cuisine but is also widely enjoyed as is, particularly as an apertivo, or even as a snack in between meals. Whether or not you consider yourself a fan of cheese, there’s no doubt that Italian cuisine has many unique and distinct types of cheese to bring to the table. In today’s blog, we will explore more Italian cheeses that you should know about in addition to the ones discussed in our previous blog. Mozzarella di Bufala
When the recipes for modern pizza were conceived well over a century ago, almost all of them included one, distinct cheese: mozzarella di bufala. To this day the go-to cheese of pizza-making, mozzarella di bufala has a delicate texture to it that, when melted, is incredibly satisfying to eat. The cheese has since been featured on many iterations of pizza, but perhaps most prominently on the Margherita pizza, a beloved and traditional style of pizza that originated from Napoli in Southern Italy and can be seen in countless Italian-inspired eateries across the globe, such as ours here at Strega by Nick Varano!
Ricotta cheese has a light and creamy texture that makes it an ideal choice for various Italian foods like lasagna, ravioli, and cannoli. In addition to being incredibly fresh and easy to enjoy, ricotta is a very versatile cheese that can be used in both savory and sweet dishes. You will likely find ricotta in your next ravioli meal, as well as your next cannoli!
