Here at Strega by Nick Varano, we pride ourselves on serving delicious, authentic, and high-quality Italian cuisine to our guests in Boston’s historic North End. If there’s one thing that can be said about us, it’s that we are all about Italian food and if we’re aren’t cooking it, we’re talking about it here on our blog. In keeping with this theme, and seeing how the fall season has officially begun, today we’ll be talking about foods that are currently in-season that pair well with Italian cooking. If that sounds interesting, continue reading below, or make a reservation with us here at Strega. Call 617-523-8481 or reserve through our website. We look forward to seeing you here.
Truffle
Though consistently popular and used in dishes all year long, truffle reaches its peak freshness during the fall season in Italy. Farmers across the nation forage for the best truffle and incorporate them into a variety of dishes that feature pasta, risotto, meat cutlets, and more. While truffle can be found in many cuisines throughout the world, it is especially beloved here in America and is commonly found in Italian-inspired dishes.
Figs
Far less savory than truffle are figs, which similarly reach their peak freshness during the fall months. Their naturally sweet taste has made them a favorite food among Italians and the world alike, as they have been incorporated into countless dishes and foods. Popular examples of this include figs as a pizza topping, which pairs excellently with the savory tastes that are typically found on pizza. Fig jam is also beloved by many and can be found on charcuterie boards and antipasto dishes.
Grapes
Virtually no Italian meal is complete without a glass of wine, which of course comes from grapes. Experts point to late summer through early fall as the best time of year to enjoy grapes, whether on their own or as a wine.
Artichokes
Another popular savory food, artichokes have been incorporated into countless dishes and tend to peak in taste around the fall. Here in America, they can be found in popular creations such as the famous spinach & artichoke dip.
