Bombardino
If its the Bombardino’s interesting name that draws you in, the taste will certainly make you stay. Popularized by patrons of Italy’s many ski resorts, such as those situated in the Alps, this hot drink remains a staple of Italian culture. A standard Bombardino consists of warm zabaione, cream, and brandy, though the drink has seen a number of diverse iterations and alterations over its existence. According to Italy Magazine, there are three distinct versions of the Bombardino:
- The Calimero, made with warm zabaione and espresso
- The Pirata (or pirate), made with warm zabaione and rum
- The Scozzese (or ‘The Scotsman’), made with warm zabaione and whiskey
Any and all of these varieties are unique and sure to arouse your tastebuds, so be sure to give a Bombardino a chance during the upcoming winter!
Vin Brule
In a way, Vin Brule is the Italian interpretation of mulled wine as it is prepared in a similar way with similar ingredients. Vin Brule begins with red wine, which is then joined by spices and flavorings such as cinnamon, cloves, oranges, and others. Much like the Bombardino, there have been countless variations of Vin Brule, with recipes calling for the addition of ginger, and even nutmeg, depending on individual preferences and tastes. This winter, consider warming up with one of Italy’s most beloved hot drinks – Vin Brule!
